All over the world sports figures are celebrated, cheered and revered. It is no surprise then that some of the most popular publications, both local and international, are sports magazines. In this article we’re going to take a look down under and discuss some of the most popular sports magazines in Australia.

As you might expect, the topic or theme of a national sports magazine will naturally depend on which sports are popular in that nation. So, what are the most popular sports in Australia?

The two most popular organized sports for Aussies are football (Australian Rules) and Cricket. Both have multiple leagues and divisions for amateurs and pros and important matches are often televised. With several world ranked courses and clubs, Golf is also an extremely popular sport in Australia. While soccer, the world’s most popular sport, has always taken a back seat to Australian rules football. Other popular organized sports include: rowing, netball, volleyball, and basketball. As for nautical sports, swimming and surfing are obviously very popular in Australia. There is also, as we mentioned, rowing, sailing, and sport fishing.

Now that we know what sports Aussies like to play, we will take a look at what sports they like to read about.

Inside Sport is the country’s number one sports magazine. The publication is not sport specific, but rather focuses on all of Australia’s top sports from surfing to golf to football to rugby. The popular magazine features in depth profiles and interviews with both national and international sports stars. It also devotes a portion of its content to international sports stories. Readers of Inside Sport have come to expect the very best in sports photography and journalism and they are seldom disappointed.

Australian Golf Digest is the nation’s most popular golf magazine and has been for over 35 years. In the pages of this quality periodical you will find interviews with golfing stars and legends as well as profiles of highly-toted prospects.

Australian Rugby News & Review is the country’s most popular rugby magazine. It has won several awards for its stories on both domestic and international rugby coverage.

Rugby League Player is a national magazine that focuses on Australia’s three Rugby leagues. It provides league and player stats and full coverage of important match up, as well as occasional interviews with top league players.

Australian Triathlete is the official magazine of the Ironman Australian Triathlon. It is published eight times a year and covers of all of the top local, national, and international races. The magazine also offers training tips and advice for both amateur and competitive triathletes.

Tracks is Australia’s most popular surfing magazine and has been on the stands for over 30 year now. Each issue transports readers to some of the most exciting and exotic surfing locales both at home and abroad. It also let’s them know what’s happening on the pro-circuit.

FourFourTwo is the country’s number one soccer magazine, though it is not published in Australia. The magazine focuses on soccer (football) around the world, especially on the pro leagues in Europe.

There are dozens of Australian magazines dedicated to sport, but the ones mentioned above are just some of the more popular ones.

Children’s magazines were very popular pre 1980s. However, when television and computer games took over, children’s interests refocused. Young imaginations and literacy skills also took a downhill slide and haven’t yet managed to recover. The importance of magazines, with their variety of stories, short enough to maintain interest, poems and rhyme, colourful illustrations, puzzles, crafts and competitions to captivate and entertain young minds has sadly been forgotten.

In the past, children’s magazines originated from the United Kingdom and were distributed worldwide. Today, those available are still mainly published in England and the United States. Sadly Australia is lagging behind in this creative field. Is it because of a lack of interest in publishing or marketing magazines, cost, or a lack of contributors? Surely not a lack of contributors! An annual Australian mentoring competition recently attracted 500 budding children’s story writers and illustrators, all trying to get a foothold into the market!

Publishers more often than not have their doors closed to new unknown authors. Traditional publishing is profit driven and new authors have not yet proven themselves as revenue generators, therefore they will not take the risk on them. Heaven forbid the manuscript they turn down might be another Harry Potter that slipped through the net! How then do emerging authors and illustrators get a foot in the door of the competitive publishing world? Self publishing is one way, but is costly. Success is limited unless you are a self-promoting marketing wiz. Partner publishing meets the author/ illustrator halfway, with marketing and publishing costs shared between publisher and author, but is restricted to books.

Many magazine publishers are willing to assess and take the risk on new authors. They often publish weekly or monthly, so their needs are ongoing. This gives newcomers a chance to showcase themselves and gives readers a variety of writing styles and ideas to keep their interest. Work by the same limited number of authors becomes very predictable. It is essential that reading material, particularly for children, remains fresh and vital to challenge young minds and is interesting enough to keep their interest. It is also important that children are exposed to non commercial related stories. Stories about popular TV and toy characters are well and good, but shouldn’t be promoted and used exclusively to attract sales. Children also need to read stories related to their own culture. Several newly formed Australian children’s magazines are now available, both in hard copy format and online.

Online magazines reach a wide audience and the stories and activities can also be selectively printed out.
Bring back the magazines! They are inexpensive and easy to read. Children can look forward to something new each week or month and it encourages parents and children to share reading together.

Poster, Art Print Publisher cum Artist Marta Gottfried Wiley was born in Mexico. She was born to an award winning artist’s family who had famous artist visiting their homes ever since her childhood. This gave her a unique chance to develop as an artist in the very early years of her life. Her tryst with various cultural Mecca gave her an even more clarity in her thoughts and made her mature enough at a very young age. She comes from the same small place where Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo painted and created master art works.

Marta was guided and trained art by her grandmother who was also an award winning artist recognized by the Government of Mexico. She there on went to study art in Mexico then Miami and later Florida where she attended Art school and focuses on art, philosophy and music. She later pursued her degree in arts from Otis Parson School of Design. It was as early as her school days that she started to sell her art paintings, designs, posters and art prints in trade shows, art galleries, and also licensed them through art prints and posters publications which were distributed for the wall art market throughout the world. Marta today owns her own poster and art prints publishing company which allows her to distribute, sell and market her art paintings, posters, art prints, music, murals, wall art, dressings and apparels.

Critically acclaimed and awarded writer, artist Matra Gotterfried has written hundreds of famous songs, painted thousands of art works, printing millions of posters and fine art prints grossing her millions of rupees in sales through licensing and profit sharing. Marta has now launched a publishing company that sells all her work, the profits of which are donated to a charity foundation. Her talent does not hold her to one medium as she is acclaimed for her work as a painter, artist, writer, musician, fashion designer and a model as she not only participated but also won Miss Mexico title for her looks and credibility she carried along with her. There is no doubt in the fact that only a few artists can ever achieve such a diverse feat and Marta is already on the peak of her achievements.

During her formative years as an art student Marta once had her Heart Brocken which gave her an opportunity to paint on a bare canvas using all her natural emotions and outburst. To her disbelief she had painted a masterpiece which was recognized as God’s Soul. Later using mixed media art she painted Women and Figurative art which featured women running in chaos touching the eyes of god and curl around in ecstasy. One of her most famous art work is a Black horse painting Lepa Zena which is regarded as a symbol of success, power and money. The art prints of horse and posters are a best seller in china and India as you can find them as a favourite for people to decorate their walls and also meet up with vaastu Shasta art and feign shui tradition.

In short Marta Gotterfriend is a rare artist who has not only scaled heights by being multi talented but also has been mature enough to sell her art paintings, music, posters, animal ar prints throughout the world and make millions out of their sales.

Back in the day I used to publish an amateur fanzine dedicated to the old school Commodore 64 computer and whilst it wasn’t the way most teenagers spend their time it was something I genuinely enjoyed doing. This was a fanzine which enjoyed worldwide, low scale distribution and those who are even slightly interested can still find some information about this 12 year old magazine by looking up ‘Zine 64 on Google as some of the articles were voluntarily archived by our readers online.

Rather than bringing you here to talk about the past, my reason for mentioning this old fanzine was that I used to spend a great deal of my life using the Serif PagePlus Desktop Publishing (DTP) utility to create the fanzine and since stopping publication I haven’t had the need to touch a similar piece of software. It occurred to me this week that I haven’t yet covered a DTP application in Click despite having been publishing Herald Express articles for over six years so I went on the lookout for a suitable application as now seemed the right time to redress my mistake.

Desktop Publishing software is used to organise text and graphics to make them presentable for publication as a newspaper, magazine or simply for a school project. Basically you start off with a blank canvas which you then drop text, images, shapes and other assorted elements on to before altering their size, shape and position as well as controlling the way that they interact with one another; allowing text to wrap around images for example. This process of manipulation should result in your final work looking a lot more professional than if you were to have just used a word processor such as Microsoft Word.

Open Source seems to be the current buzzword and determined not to disappoint the application we will be looking at today, Scribus (www.scribus.net) is indeed also Open Source meaning that it is created and supported primarily by users rather than a large profit making company. This particular piece of open source software has been designed as a DTP application for Windows, Unix, Linux, Mac OS X and even the IBM OS/2 Operating System. Those of you who haven’t heard of OS/2, don’t worry, you didn’t miss much but if I get nostalgic I may cover it in a future article.

Since it’s fairly safe to say that the majority of readers are Windows users we’ll stick to this version of the software which comes in a free and relatively small 18mb download. Needless to say all the usual Desktop Publishing functions are present in Scribus; you can lay down text and graphics frames, wrap text around graphics present on the page and create master pages for allowing you to keep a design present over a multi page document. The interface is primarily intuitive and it shouldn’t take those familiar with any similar application long to pick it up although there are a couple of annoying points, such as manually having to resize images to fit a frame, which take a while getting used to. If you delve a little deeper you’ll find a number of fairly advanced features such as CMYK colour separations (important if getting your work professionally printed), ICC colour management as well as supporting a modern XML based file format or the ability to export your work as a Adobe Acrobat PDF file.

There is no denying that Scribus is a nifty little application although it is fairly rough around the edges and some of the features of the application do take a little getting used to and whilst there are certainly more powerful applications out there you do have to pay for these unfortunately. If I was pushed I would also recommend taking a look at the free version of Serif PagePlus available at www.freeserifsoftware.com. This particular application although lacking in some of the more advanced features of Scribus is designed from the base up to be user friendly so some users may find it a better alternative.

To choose the path to traditional publishing is to follow in the footsteps of famous writers, artists, and musicians down the ages; the path that opens up the floodgates to recognition for your expertise, the path that empowers you to do what you love to do and get paid for doing it; the path that enables you to earn in perpetuity…

Residual income

Incremental income

Let’s review your avenues of potential earnings as a traditionally published author:

Book royalties

Public lending right (PLR)

Editions licensed for manufacture to another publisher

Single issue or one-shot periodical rights

Translation rights

Sound broadcasting rights

Merchandising rights

Educational reprint rights

Royalty-inclusive sales

Mail order sales

Book clubs

Now let’s examine these avenues of profit in relation to residual and incremental income:

#1 and #2 are residual inasmuch as they continue to produce guaranteed income year after year during the lifetime of your book; the spectrum of which could be 5, 10, 15, 20; 30 years – sometimes even longer.

#3 – #11 are incremental inasmuch as they represent opportunities to produce one-off ‘piggyback’ income.

Residual and incremental earnings are what every creative writer aspires to; passive income from book sales, offline and online; royalties that increase year-on-year with multiple editions, reprints, rights, licensing, etc. Add to that PLR (public lending library rental fees) and your residuals burgeon with each new book you succeed in having published.

Do it once, repeat the formula, and you will profit forever after

Conversely, when you choose the routes of print-on-demand or self publishing your overall earnings potential diminishes in tandem…

No guarantee of regular book royalties

No access to public lending right fees

No access to licensed editions

No single issue or one-shot periodical rights

No translation rights

No bound broadcasting rights

No merchandising rights

No educational reprint rights

No royalty-inclusive sales

Limited access to mail order sales

Limited access to book clubs

From the knowledge you have gleaned from these modules you now have at your command the power to become a traditionally published author and profit accordingly.

Which route will you choose?
